Madrid took me by surprise

You know that feeling when you don’t expect too much of a city and you think it’s overrated just because of the stereotypes? Well, not the case with Madrid.

Our trip initially was to Morocco only, but we found cheap tickets to Madrid too, and it seemed like a good opportunity to have the chance of seeing the capital of Spain.

Public transport

From the airport to the city centre, the subway is the easiest and cheapest way is to travel. You can buy your metro tickets  from the Information centre where you can find a suitable pass (there are some discounts that may be convenient for you) or right from the ticket machines.

Accommodation

Our hotel was located near the Plaza Mayor, only 5 minutes walking. I recommend this hotel for the location, cleanliness, friendliness of the staff and for the beautiful design of the rooms.

What to see in 2 days 

Gate of Europe – for architectural photography. Stop at Plaza de Castilla – M10 (blue line)

On the same line M10, stop at Santiago Bernabeu if you want to visit the stadium.

Plaza Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel, Gran Via, El corte Ingles – all these attractions are close to each other. You will get tired if you decide to shop on Gran Via, but have a rest at Corte Ingles  from where you can enjoy a drink with a panoramic view over the Capitol Building and Gran Via street.

I also found a Churreria while wandering around Plaza Mayor. It’s not the oldest (like San Gino Chocolateria), but I loved it.

It’s called Los Artesanos  The prices are good and you should definitely try their chocolate.

 

On your way to Prado Museum  (Stop Atocha station 5-10′ walk) you cannot miss a plant  wall i.e. Caixa Forum.

The Royal Palace of Madrid – if you are a UE citizen, you can visit the palace for free from Monday-Thusday between 16.00 – 18.00 (bring your ID with you and get earlier because there will be a queue)

Temple of Debod – an Egyptian temple in Madrid (stop at Plaza de Espana);

Retiro Park and Crystal Palace – huge park, beautiful edifices, have your camera ready.

I’ve only visited the main attractions in Madrid, because it was more like a last minute trip and I missed a bull fight, because they’re only in the summer and a flamenco show.

There are plenty to see in Madrid and don’t take this city for granted like I did.

P.S.Prepare to spend more than 1 hour in the park and at Prado Museum ( they are huge)
